Getting City Smart: CubeSmart Self-Storage Facility in Northwest Carrollton, Texas

Written by Bella O.

This is one of a series of articles spotlighting our storage facilities and neighborhoods.

Carrollton, Texas is a historic city, located just 14 miles north of Dallas. It has been recognized as the 12th Best Place to Move by Forbes Magazine (2009). In the next 3 years, the population is projected to grow to 140,000 people from the approximately 119,000 that were recorded in the 2010 census. The increase in population means that options for additional space will decrease. From holiday decorations to equipment for out of season athletes, storage facilities will be a great place to leave everything you don’t want cluttering your house.

Carrollton has recently become known for being home to several Olympic athletes. Most notably, three Olympic medalists, boasting a combined count of two bronze and three gold medals – Katie Meili, (swimmer born in Carrollton), Deron Williams (basketball player, attended school in the Lewisville Independent School District), and Taylor Teagarden (baseball player who attended high school in Carrollton). Other well-known athletes include Keith Moreland of the Chicago Cubs, Jason Maxiell of the Detroit Pistons, and Melissa Rycroft who was a cheerleader for the Dallas Cowboys.

Around Us

Even with the quick growing population, the City of Carrollton features many parks and trails. In 1975, the City Council set out with a goal to have 18.5 acres of public park land for every 1000 residents of the city. Webb Park, the city's first park, opened in 1924, and is still open today. The largest is known as Elm Fork Nature Preserve. It was donated to the city in 1986 by the Bramblitt family, and has never been clear cut. In addition to the parks, Carrollton is also the site of over 2 dozen paved trails, perfect for hiking, biking, or running. The trails vary in length, from the shortest at .21 miles to the largest at 4.25 miles; you're guaranteed to find the perfect distance for your afternoon jog.

Old Downtown Carrollton is a center for historical sites and all sorts of activities that take place throughout the year. Originally founded in 1901, it is still the site of a buzzing retail scene. With the popularity of the square first taking off in 1913, historic landmarks have popped up in the area over the course of time. The gazebo, built in 1921, was the site of concerts and town dances when it was first constructed. The Plaza Theater served as a movie theater for the town from 1949-1994. In 1994, the theater was renamed the Plaza Arts Center, and is currently being used as an art gallery as well as being a location to host events. It stands today virtually unchanged since it's opening.

Movie on the Square is a monthly pet-friendly event where people of all ages lounge and enjoy some of the latest movies for free. Other festivities accompany the night, such as themed booths, activities, and photo opportunities. In the fall, the local Annual Festival at the Switchyard provides access to free rides, games, and family-friendly concerts.

Less than 10 minutes away you will find the best Texas Barbeque around, as recommended by our very own CubeSmart facility manager – is Hard Eight BBQ. The restaurant is a "truly Texas-style eating experience," where both residents and visitors nearby Carrollton go to enjoy dinner.
