Evaluate Your Home
Evaluate your home’s interior and exterior. What do you notice first — everyday clutter or the home’s best features? Have a trusted (and frank) friend come in to give you their perspective as well. Make a list of what needs to be cleared away, cleaned up and moved out.
Along with clearing the clutter and depersonalizing, reduce your furnishings for a “just right” feel. There needs to be enough in place to suggest scale and capacity of furniture within each room, but not so much that traffic flow is hindered or that anything obscures your home’s architectural elements. Take any “extra” furnishings to your storage space.
Enhance the buyer’s imagination by replacing patterned wall coverings with neutral paint and installing low-grade tan wall-to-wall carpet and neutral window coverings. Bold furniture, decorations and accouterments may work for your everyday life, but it will work against you when you’re trying to sell your house. This one is an investment, but if your home has that “move-in ready” feel, the investment can pay for itself.
De-Clutter and Clean Ensure that every inch of your home sparkles for a fresh, welcoming appearance. Also address any smells or odors resulting from pets, cooking and smoking. It helps to have a friend (a neutral nose if you will) stop by and let you know if they smell anything off-putting.
