CubeSmart was proud to be a major sponsor of the fourth annual Children’s National Race for Every Child on October 1, 2016. Nearly 5,000 participants came out to support the event on the soggy Saturday morning where more the $1.2 million was raised for Children’s National. It is CubeSmart’s second consecutive year supporting this event after learning of this renowned institution through a valued business partner’s personal experience. Noah Mehrkam has worked with CubeSmart’s self-storage management team for his self-storage properties for more than 3 years. Mehrkam came to know Children’s National due to medical needs that hit close to home. Since then, he has been a strong supporter and advocate of its services for children and families. Upon sharing the importance of his experience, CubeSmart was eager to join Mehrkam in his support of the organization and the surrounding community.

The race is a relatively new effort to raise awareness about and provide funds for the good work done by Children’s National and give back to an institution that changes the lives of children and entire families. “CubeSmart's participation in the Race for Every Child underscores its commitment to being a part of the greater Washington, DC-area community,” said Mehrkam.  “As CubeSmart continues to serve the storage needs of thousands of people across the region, it is clear they are equally committed to giving back by mobilizing their local team members to participate in the race and by providing much-needed financial contributions.  The excitement, engagement, and awareness provided by leadership-level contributors, like CubeSmart, help to fuel service that Children's National provides to so many families that have incredibly challenging and often times dire healthcare needs.”

Along with an increased contribution to this year’s race, the number of participants in CubeSmart’s race team almost tripled, consisting of teammates from local DC-area storage facilities. Team lead Michael Jones from our Shirlington Avenue self-storage facility in Arlington said, “Having the opportunity to be involved in a cause bigger than myself is monumental to me. I enjoy having the chance to give back without expectation of anything in return.” It is Jones’ second year as CubeSmart’s Team Lead for the event. He was joined by teammates from CubeSmart Self-Storage of Rockville,  CubeSmart Self-Storage of WoodbridgeCubeSmart Self-Storage of FredericksburgCubeSmart Self-Storage of WarrentonCubeSmart Self-Storage of BeltsvilleCubeSmart Self-Storage of HyattsvilleCubeSmart Self-Storage of Capitol Heights and CubeSmart Self-Storage of Washington on Upshur Street NW.

“Having so many team members participate this year meant there were plenty of us available to mingle with the parents and children and speak with participants to foster a lasting relationship with the CubeSmart brand as it pertains to our concern for children’s health.” The CubeSmart team handed out frisbees, water bottles, and coloring books to those who stopped by the booth.

First-time participant District Manager Jennifer Martinez said, “At CubeSmart we pride ourselves on providing great service to our customers. Our customers are the community and we want to support them in any way we can. Providing a good example for my team makes it easier for them to see how we can affect the world around us in a positive way. This race gave me and my team that opportunity and I am grateful.”

We are honored to have been a part of this event. Here are some photos captured from the day:
