Zen Office Must #1: Comfortable Furniture<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In general, your Zen office upgrade doesn\u2019t have to come with a big\nprice tag. The one possible exception is office furniture. Investing in\nquality, ergonomically correct furniture makes a big difference in how you feel\nand therefore, how you work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t scrimp on your office chair. Face it,\nyou spend a lot of time in that seat so it better be comfy and supportive. Look\nfor adjustable seat height to ensure you can align ergonomically with any work\nsurface (a good rule of thumb is attaining a straight line from your elbow to\nyour fingertips). Back support is also key to help avoid slouching and tension\nin your lower back. A chair with proper lumbar support will allow you to keep a\nslight curve in your lower back and to sit up straight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next, the desk. Workspace surface area is important\nbut varies based on individual needs. If you require two monitors or a lot of\nspace to spread out paper and write in your Zen office, be sure to find a desk with ample\nsurface area. If <\/a>space is a hot commodity<\/a>, use\ncreative space-saving solutions like a Murphy desk. Other features to consider\nare storage, adjustability, and quality. Nothing will reduce your Zen like a\nwobbly desk! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Places to store things and keep\nyour space organized are essential components of Zen office d\u00e9cor. To maintain your Zen workspace, identify\nthe clutter hotspots in your office and find solutions to keep things tidy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cord\nmanagement is life. Just the thought of a tangle of computer cords and cables\nmakes me feel tense. Zenscape\nthat cord sitch with creative storage and organizational solutions. Zip ties or\nVelcro ties are cheap and effective. A bit of duct tape on the underside of\nyour desk also works. To get a bit fancier, mount an <\/a>under desk cable tray<\/a> to\nkeep that unsightly snaggle of cords out of sight.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Onto\nall the paper. For as digital as we are in this day and age there is no getting\naround the eventual build-up of paper in our offices. Be it mail or files or\nmeeting agendas, accumulating paper is something we can\u2019t quite seem to duck. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To\nkeep paper from stacking up and causing an eyesore, make sure it\u2019s organized\nand out of sight. Shred and recycle what you don\u2019t need on a regular basis to\nprevent pile creep. When you must keep things available for quick reference,\nuse a slim desktop hanging file folder. If your job requires a lot of paperwork\nand you seem to be the keeper of paper copies dating back to the Jurassic Era,\nconsider getting an <\/a>off-site storage unit<\/a> to house a few filing cabinets. That way, those files will be there\nwhen you need them without adding stress or detracting from your Zen office d\u00e9cor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For\nall the other items we tend to store in our offices, pick up a few decorative\nbaskets or boxes in a range of sizes. I use an oversized basket to keep my\ncollection of work bags (I mean, you do need one for every season and for a range\nof outfits) and a series of smaller baskets for things like paper clips,\npost-it notes, and pens. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And\nremember, upcycling works here, too! Create your own Zen office d\u00e9cor by repurposing jars or\ncans. Patterned fabric, a glue gun, and 20 minutes can go a long way!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ok, that might\nbe a little extreme but there\u2019s something so Dark Ages about bad lighting. Literally.\nA Zen office needs\nlight!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While natural light is great, it\u2019s not always an option. Luckily today\u2019s lighting options mimic natural light and keep things bright, relaxing, and motivating. Halogen light bulbs produce a gentle white light considered most akin to natural lighting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anyone\nwho interacts with a kid between the ages of five and 15 knows \u201cfidgets\u201d are\nnot only a thing, they are the<\/em> thing!\nFidgets are hand-held contraptions to keep fingers busy and <\/a>are said to<\/a> help maintain focus and\na sense of calm by providing an outlet for nervous energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nervous\nenergy doesn\u2019t go away when you start working a full-time gig as an adult. In\nfact, most of us would argue it only intensifies.
