It marks a step forward, together, with the shared hope that living together will enhance your lives and deepen your loves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This milestone is also one of compromise. What once was only up to you to decide is now up to <em>you both<\/em>. Everything is interwoven. The actions one takes, or doesn\u2019t take, have a huge impact on the other \u2013 and the relationship on a whole. It\u2019s not always easy to find a new normal together, but it\u2019s definitely worth the effort.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While we can\u2019t offer relationship advice, we do have some tips to keep in mind when combining your furniture and home d\u00e9cor with your new roommate\u2019s. Especially if most of what you own is inherited or bought mainly for its price. But just because you might not have a lot that represents a certain style doesn\u2019t mean you don\u2019t have preferences. And it\u2019s important to define them before you start trying to make something cohesive from a mix of your partner\u2019s stuff with yours or buying things together. But how?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Flip through magazines, build Pinterest\nboards, and subscribe to home decor e-newsletters to gain more exposure to\ndifferent decor styles and the vocabulary to express what you like \u2013&nbsp;and\nwhy you like it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Take a good hard look at your stuff. Even if\nit\u2019s a mishmash (<em>especially <\/em>if it\u2019s a\nmishmash!), think about the pieces you are truly drawn to and if they have\nanything in common: Natural materials? Vintage? Curvolinear? <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Consider how you\u2019ll use your new home together and what impact that should have on your home d\u00e9cor choices: will you entertain a lot? Netflix and chill? No one needs\nendless sets of sheets or double dishes. On the other hand,it can be hard to\nadmit how attached you are to <em>your<\/em>\ncan opener, until you realize you have to give it up.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our\nbest advice is to 1. take a good hard look at your stuff, 2. sort it into piles\nof \u201cmove,\u201d \u201cstore,\u201d \u201cdonate,\u201d \u201crecycle\u201d or \u201ctrash,\u201d and 3. encourage your\npartner to do the same. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of\ncourse, everything you are going to \u201cmove\u201d are the things you want to bring\nwith you on day one: your seasonal clothes, plants, personal effects,\ntoiletries, you name it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStore\u201d\nis for things you want to keep but probably don\u2019t need right away, like\nexercise equipment, duplicate items and clothes that are not in season. You\u2019d be surprised, but you can pretty much find a place\nto take most anything as long as it\u2019s not broken or stained. You can always put\nbigger items, like mattresses, up for free on Craigslist, and they\u2019ll be gone\nbefore you know it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRecycle\u201d\nand \u201cTrash\u201d are pretty self-explanatory. Moving is the best time to slim down\nyour possessions and get very particular about what you want to bring with you\nto your new environment. Take the opportunity to lighten the load before\ncombining it with your partner\u2019s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Renovate, Redesign, Refurbish<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cubesmart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/resized-couple-painting.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19426\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Make your new place yours, together.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>One of\nthe most fun parts of moving in together is making your space \u2013&nbsp;and stuff\n\u2013 look good together. Fun . . . but also challenging. Especially if one of you\nis 100% Swedish modern and the other is 100% Bohemian vintage. There is a point when you need to admit defeat and start the hunt for items that you can agree on and even own together. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rather\nthan buying new, we suggest checking out local consignment stores, thrift\nstores, estate sales and Craiglist for secondhand options. It\u2019s better for\nMother Earth \u2013 and your wallet \u2013 and can make for a fun adventure or two. Just\nask John Fryer, one of our Denver CubeSmart customers who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cubesmart.com\/blog\/your-stories\/real-life\/inside-the-design-eye-of-john-fryer\/\">buys and resells vintage furniture he keeps in a self-storage\nunit<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\nare a couple of key tips to keep in mind when buying vintage furniture,\nincluding:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Check out the bones! Make sure the frame is sturdy, the drawers      slide easily and the doors line up. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t get scared off by surface imperfections. At the same time,      don\u2019t buy endless DIY projects for yourself.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assess everything for pests \u2013 and pest damage. You already know to take a close look at upholstered furniture, but bugs can also infest wood. Buyer beware.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Coordinating d\u00e9cor styles and pieces when you move in together can be a challenge. But it isn\u2019t an insurmountable one.
