Halloween is right around the corner and with it comes the chance to deck out your home, doorstep and\/or front porch with an array of ghoulishly decorative delights. Falling as it does right in the middle of the fall season, Halloween is also the perfect time to build on all the work you may have already done to create a harvest or autumnal theme in your d\u00e9cor. Baskets of mums, we\u2019re looking at you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Halloween d\u00e9cor can be a fanciful, short-termed treat for you and your neighbors or guests but, of course, it has to fit into your style, budget, and overall interest in the holiday. Don\u2019t feel pressured into going all out with a 12-foot skeleton, inflatable Frankenstein, and a two-story spiderweb if you\u2019re not feeling it, is what we\u2019re getting at. This is all about you and discovering what you want to do \u2013 and what you want to spend your hard-earned time and cash on. If that\u2019s a big \u201cnothing,\u201d then so be it!  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

However\u2026if you\u2019ve shied away from Halloween d\u00e9cor in the past, thinking it perhaps too gruesome or childlike to fit into your typical tastes, we invite you to keep scrolling for some fresh ideas on the style. It\u2019s not all ghosts and goblins anymore! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gothic Noir<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

But<\/em> while\nwe\u2019re on the topic of ghosts and goblins, let\u2019s first dive into gothic noir.\nThis combination of gothic literature and film noir brings the best of both \u2013\nhorror, darkness, fear, nightmares, paranoia \u2013 into your living space! Sounds\ninviting, doesn\u2019t it? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is obviously the most\ntraditional of the Halloween styles \u2013 and the spookiest. Think animatronic\nghosts, bats swinging on invisible fishing line, dim lights, dark shadows and\nflickering candles, spiderwebs, low moaning noises, tombstones, decay, and\ndeath. Nothing comfortable or welcoming here \u2013 except, of course, to the\nlegions of trick or treaters who are going to target your house as first on the\nlist. Fair warning: choosing this decor style means you\u2019re going to have to\npick up an extra bag \u2013 or ten \u2013 of candy on your October grocery store runs.\n\nIf\nyou\u2019re a little bit of a gothic soul yourself and want to incorporate some of\nthese elements into your year-round look, we love a black feather or black branch wreath<\/a> hung indoors. Animal\nskulls and taxidermy (particularly of ravens), flickering LED candles,\nportraits with eyes that seem to follow you as you move, dark walls and somber\nwallpapers \u2013 all can combine for an unmistakably Victorian vibe. \n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Family-friendly Fun<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Making a 180-degree turn away from Gothic, may we present our next Halloween d\u00e9cor theme: family-friendly fun. Not all kids (or families) like the darker side of Halloween \u2013 and for good reason. It can be scary and off-putting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Luckily, in this day and age,\nwe\u2019ve got plenty of choices in how we choose to celebrate \u2013 and decorate. Your\npumpkins don\u2019t have to be jack o\u2019lanterns in need of dentures \u2013 they can be\ncute unicorns (as pictured above). Or paint your white ceramic or plastic\nghosts pale pastel colors to make them warmer and more welcoming. Instead of\nbig gnarly spiders, use beautiful butterflies. Replace creepy sticks and\nforlorn branches with corn stalks and hay bales. \n\nUsing\nbright or pastel colors is one way to \u201cde-scarify\u201d Halloween decor. Another way\nis to use cartoon elements \u2013 like googly eyes or grinning monsters \u2013 to lift\nthe mood. Lights also make children (and adults) feel at ease, so be sure to\nstring lots of sparkly lights between trees to illuminate the dark spots. Last\ntip? A speaker blasting The Monster Mash and Thriller is pretty much guaranteed\nto put big smiles on little faces.\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Go Au Naturel<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Stretch your look beyond Halloween with this environmentally-friendly display.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

One of the most environmentally friendly Halloween d\u00e9cor style choices you can make is to choose all natural elements for your decorating. Sure, it may not instantly read as creepy as traditional Halloween decorating but the impact on the earth \u2013 and your youngest neighbors and visitors \u2013 will be a whole lot gentler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, typical Autumnal d\u00e9cor like mums, gourds, grasses, and pumpkins (and mums in pumpkins!) also fit into Halloween d\u00e9cor. To add a bit more holiday flair, we suggest the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Sticks!<\/strong> No need to paint them; just look for forlorn, barren sticks to give a lonely and spooky feel. Throw them in vases, weave a front door wreath, or collect them with a black velvet ribbon for a front door swag.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Hay! <\/strong>Don\u2019t bother buying straw bales from big box stores if you can help it. Instead, go straight to the source to support local farmers (if you have any nearby) and use the strands to create hair for your jack o\u2019 lanterns if you\u2019re feeling particularly creative. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Mosses and dead leaves! <\/strong>If you\u2019re going for a more gothic, natural appeal, head to a local forest for mosses and dead leaves to scatter around your front porch and stoop. After all, nothing says abandoned cemetery \u2013 and Halloween candy! \u2013 like decaying natural elements.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Work With What You\u2019ve Got<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Use what you have on hand, plus some pumpkins to make the day festive.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

    Similar to going au naturel, working with what you\u2019ve got generally has less of an impact on the earth \u2013 and your wallet. Dig through your self-storage space<\/a>, attic, or garage for wooden crates, earthenware, metal milking jugs, old materials (like burlap or velvet), dried flowers, and other knick knacks that give off an antiquated feel. Create small scenes or groupings like the one pictured above interspersed with carved (or whole) pumpkins, gourds and other autumnal elements and you\u2019ve got yourself Halloween d\u00e9cor pleasing to the eye and the budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    If that\u2019s not creepy enough for\nyour tastes, a few other elements to add in from around the house could include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Battery-powered twinkly lights<\/strong> to give a ghostly glow inside the Jack o\u2019 Lanterns at night<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    2. Black spray-painted fake plants (and pots)<\/strong> nestled in with the real ones to up the spooky factor  <\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. LED color-changing strip lights<\/strong> repurposed to cast an orange glow at your front door (or wherever you choose) from nightfall until bedtime<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    4. Old lanterns<\/strong> with flickering LED candles <\/li>\n\n\n\n
    5. Scarecrows made of <\/strong>old clothes and stuffed with newspaper! If placed in just the right location, it\u2019s almost guaranteed to spook the pants off a visitor or two.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      Get Artsy With It<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      It doesn’t take much to craft unique decorations for your home. Just a little bit of time.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

      For the artists and crafters among us, Halloween is really a time to show your stuff. From costumes to cookies to d\u00e9cor, DIY projects suitable for every age group and skill set truly abound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      If you\u2019re one of the lucky that\ncan create something that others want to look at, this is your time to shine!\nGetting artsy with your Halloween decor means you have a virtually unlimited\ncanvas that you can take as far as your imagination wants it to go. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Some of the best that we\u2019ve seen\nrecently (and while researching this article!) are listed below: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. Pumpkin dioramas (complete with moss and tiny gravestones)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      2. Wreaths made out of plastic snakes<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      3. Wreaths made out of fake mini-pumpkins spray painted gold or white<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      4. Wine bottles painted matte black with orange tapers stuck in the tops<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      5. Painting or decoupaging pumpkins instead of carving them (keeps the squirrels away)<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      6. Witch hat, bat, and ghost garlands <\/li>\n\n\n\n
      7. Cheesecloth and spray starch ghosts<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        We hope we gave you a little something fresh to think about as we round the corner into Halloween. Of course, you can take your seasonal or holiday d\u00e9cor any direction you want \u2013 the only part that matters is that it feels authentic to you and that, at the end of the day, you enjoy both the process and the end result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        When Halloween is in our\ncollective rear view mirror, you\u2019ll want to pack and store all of the non-perishable\noutdoor decor items into sturdy plastic containers with a label on the outside.\n(We like to color code our containers for holidays \u2013 orange for Halloween, red\nfor Valentine\u2019s Day, etc.) Remove any batteries before storing and throw out\nanything that won\u2019t last until next year. Halloween costumes should be stored\nin garment bags, while anything paper should be in archival boxes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
