Compounding the challenge is that while most of us know how\nto clean various parts of the house from experience,\nhow to clean a home office correctly is a little trickier. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether you\u2019ve got a big office, a small office, or a simple workstation in your home, at your employer\u2019s, or both<\/em>, it\u2019s critically important to keep any space you work from clutter-free, clean, and disinfected. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Study after study<\/a> shows the benefits of cleaning and\norganizing, including the positive effects they have on stress levels and\nphysical health. Regularly cleaning and\nmaintaining your home, office and\/or home office can also help you think more\nclearly about the task at hand, feel more in control, and improve your mood.\nWhat could be better?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Clear all the loose papers, records, and files off your desk. <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Scan,\ntake pictures, or transcribe anything you don\u2019t want to lose track of into\ndigital files. If you regularly need to hold on to physical items, consider\ninvesting in filing cabinets. Otherwise, use\nfolders and some sort of basic wall or desk filing apparatus to keep items in\norder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Empty out, clean, and organize desk drawers and office supplies. <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Even if you\u2019re lucky enough to have a home or office cleaning service, chances are they\u2019re not\nsorting your office supplies and cleaning\nout your drawers. Take the time to go through your collection of pens,\nPost-its, and the like and get rid of what you don\u2019t need or can\u2019t use. Once\nthe work is through, it might be a good idea to buy a\ndrawer organizer to keep everything neat and tidy moving forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Clean and disinfect computer equipment and office desk.<\/strong> <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Wipe down your desk and chair with paper towels or a soft cloth\nand spray cleaner. (Test your cleaner on a small, inconspicuous area before\nusing it, especially if you\u2019re cleaning anything fabric, antique, or easily\ndamaged.) Use a microfiber cloth to wipe\ndown your monitor, mouse, and mouse pad and compressed air to clean out any\ncrumbs or other debris from your keyboard. Is it visually cluttered? Consider streamlining the post-its, snapshots, and stickers for a cleaner and less distracting look. If you are someone who loves to write down notes or ideas, consider purchasing a small, wall-hanging white board to use when inspiration hits.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re one of them, working from the same place you rest, relax, and eat can create a stumbling block to maintaining a clean, organized home \u2013 not to mention a clean, organized home office. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Surprise, surprise: that\u2019s where home office organization comes in! Without a\nclear, usable and consistent organizational system in place, papers, pens,\nsupplies, and even laptops and cords will soon overtake any area of your home\nthey can. After all, when you work from home,\nthe work never stops. And neither does the clutter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
