What\nbetter way to soak up the new season than from your bicycle during National\nBike Month in May?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Established in 1956 to celebrate and showcase the numerous\nbenefits of bicycling, National Bike Month is the perfect time to dust off your\nride, leave the car at home and reconnect with your community from the back of\nyour bicycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Finding Ways to #BikeThere<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>National Bike Month lasts the entirety of May. Throughout\nthe month, <a href=\"https:\/\/bikeleague.org\/events\/bike-month\/\">the League of American Bicyclists<\/a> is\nhighlighting ways Americans can #BikeThere instead of relying on their cars and\ntrucks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eager to incorporate more cycling into your daily life\nfor the entire month? Consider the following avenues for doing just that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Run Errands: <\/strong>Across the country, <a href=\"https:\/\/iseptaphilly.com\/blog\/nationalbikemonth\">40% of all\ntrips are less than two miles,<\/a> making\ncycling a feasible and emission-free way to run an errand or make a small trip.\nConsider grabbing your bike instead of your car keys to make that quick run to\nthe post office or grocery store.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Replace a Workout: <\/strong>Forget the gym for a day and instead hop on your bike to work up a\nsweat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Bike to Work: <\/strong>Less than 1% of Americans commute to work, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/newsroom\/stories\/bike-month.html\">but it\u2019s possible<\/a> \u2014 and growing in\npopularity in communities across the country. As part of the month-long\ncelebration of all things bicycling, commuters are encouraged to leave their\ncars at home and bike to work. After all, it\u2019s the only big American city to earn the distinction as\na \u201cplatinum\u201d bicycle friendly community by the League of American Bicyclists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The city boasts 385 miles of bikeways including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>162 miles of\npainted bike lanes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>35 miles of\nprotected bike lanes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>94 miles of\ngreenways shared with vehicles with lower speed limits and islands to calm\nmotor traffic<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>85 miles of\nmulti-use paths for pedestrians, cyclists and other non-motorized traffic<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, there are 6,500 public bike racks around\nthe city and 31 intersections feature bike-specific traffic signals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh, and Portland leads the country in percentage of\ncommuters who bike to work at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.portlandoregon.gov\/transportation\/article\/629951\">more than 6%<\/a> \u2014 significantly\nhigher than the national average of 0.5%. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Notable Bike Trails<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.portland.gov\/transportation\/walking-biking-transit-safety\/documents\/classic-downtown-waterfront-loop-walk-map-0\/download\"><strong>The Classic Waterfront Loop:<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>Ride along the Willamette River between the Sellwood and Steel bridges\nover mostly flat, paved trails for a scenic 10.6-mile loop.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.portland.gov\/transportation\/walking-biking-transit-safety\/documents\/roses-parks-and-greens-tour-map-0\/download\"><strong>Roses, Parks &amp; Greens Tour:<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>Soak up the greenery in this northeast Portland ride that\nruns through residential streets and greenways, including a community orchard\nand hydro park.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.portland.gov\/transportation\/walking-biking-transit-safety\/documents\/art-foster-ride-map-0\/download\"><strong>The Art of Foster Ride:<\/strong><\/a><strong> <\/strong>Discover the many murals and street paintings of Portland\u2019s\nFoster-Powell area on this 5.6-mile trail.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Minneapolis: Bike-Friendly\nMeets Minnesota Nice<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Perennially recognized as a top bike-friendly city,\nMinneapolis residents have plentiful options and opportunities to spin their\nwheels when getting around town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Minnesota city\u2019s bicycle bona fides include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>16 miles of on-street\nprotected bikeways<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>98 miles of bike lanes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>101 miles of\noff-street bikeways and trails<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The city is so focused on bike safety and friendliness,\nthat even during its notoriously snow-filled winters, Minneapolis regularly\nmaintains and plows the bike lanes for commuters and riders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And despite those harsh winters, biking to work in\nMinneapolis may make you happier. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planetizen.com\/news\/2022\/10\/119088-study-biking-brings-happiness\">According to a University of Minnesota study<\/a>, bike commuters were happier than their non-biking counterparts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Notable Bike Trails<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/midtowngreenway.org\/about-the-greenway\/overview\/\"><strong>The Midtown Greenery:<\/strong><\/a><strong>\n<\/strong>A former railroad corridor, the\nMidtown Greenery is a 5.5-mile trail boasting two bike lanes and one runners\u2019\nlane. On the east side, you\u2019ll ride\nalong the University of Minnesota\u2019s campus and Dinky Town before crossing the\nStone Arch Bridge for the western stretch along Gold Medal Park and Bohemian\nFlats.<strong><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>San Francisco: The\nCycling City by the Bay<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most bikeable cities in the nation, San\nFrancisco regularly collects accolades for its bike friendliness. The city has\nput a significant amount of time and resources into creating a biking\nexperience for residents across the City by the Bay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bicycling may be the real San Francisco treat,\nconsidering across its 464 miles of bikeways, the city has:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>42 miles of protected\nbike lanes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>78 miles of off-street\npaths and trails<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>21 miles of buffered\nbike lanes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>139 miles of striped\nbike lanes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>San Francisco\u2019s extensive bike infrastructure makes it\neasier to bike to work for many. Look out for wildlife sightings as you catch plenty\nof sunshine.
