Keep reading to learn eight tried and true tips\nto clean out your freezer for more storage \u2013 and pack it back up for better\nelectrical efficiency. Of course, these are meant as general guidelines. You\u2019ll\nwant to take a look at your manufacturer\u2019s instruction manual for specific\ninstructions before you start. Gather your supplies<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nYou will need a number of\ncleaning supplies to make short work of your freezer cleanout task, so make\nsure to gather everything necessary before you start the job. We suggest the\nfollowing:\n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Plastic\ngloves<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Homemade\ncleaning solution: one tablespoon of baking soda <strong>or<\/strong> one tablespoon of vinegar) per quart of warm water is\nnon-toxic and very affordable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Homemade\nsanitizing solution (one tablespoon of liquid bleach per quart of warm water)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bucket<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Microfiber\ncleaning cloths or clean rags \/ towels<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Activated\ncharcoal or additional baking soda if you are dealing with persistent odors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>3-4 towels or\na stack of newspapers if you plan on defrosting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Pro\nTip:<\/em><\/strong> It\u2019s always recommended to use organic,\nnatural, and\/or nontoxic cleaning solutions around food. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Empty out your freezer<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Take everything out and assess its condition: Is the bag open or leaking? Does the food have freezer burn? Has it been frozen for too long to be edible? Anything you have any doubt about should go straight into the compost bin. Everything else, you\u2019ll want to store in a cooler with lots of ice throughout the entire cleaning process. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodnetwork.com\/healthyeats\/healthy-tips\/how-to-clean-sanitize-freezer\">Food Network<\/a> published the below guidelines on how long specific meats can be stored in your freezer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lunch meat\n&amp; sausage: 1-2 months<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fatty fish\n(tuna, salmon): 2-3 months<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cooked meat\nleftovers: 2-3 months<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ground beef\n&amp; pork: 3-4 months<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pork chops\n&amp; roasts: 4-6 months<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lean fish\n(cod, haddock, flounder): no more than 6 months<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Beef steaks\nand roasts: 6-12 months<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Even\nif something you\u2019ve frozen <em>should<\/em>\nstill be edible according to guidelines, you don\u2019t want to mess around with\nfood safety. Take a close look at everything you are considering saving and\ntoss anything that seems remotely past its prime. As anyone who\u2019s had it can\ntell you, food poisoning is not anything to take lightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Defrost your freezer<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIf your freezer needs to be\ndefrosted, you\u2019ll want to check your owner\u2019s manual for any specific defrosting\ninstructions, including how to unplug and empty the drain or drainage tube. In\ngeneral, you will need to turn the freezer off, unplug it, and leave the door\nor drawer open. (This is also a good time to pull it out from the wall to clean\nup any dust or debris that\u2019s collected behind it.) Put your towels or newspapers\nbeneath the freezer as best as you can to absorb the water. Take out any\nremovable shelves, drawers, bins and trays from the interior. Defrosting often\ntakes 2 or 3 hours (or more!), but you can speed up the process by directing a\nfan at the freezer. Of course, if you don\u2019t own a manual defrost freezer, skip\nahead to step 4. \n\n\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Clean shelves, drawers, and other removable parts<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/photos\/BlLh0xjlJCw\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cubesmart.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/800X600_Blog08_04-3-1.jpg\" alt=\"Person washing hands in a kitchen sink. \" class=\"wp-image-21467\"\/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Take shelves and other removable bins out of your freezer, bring to room temperature, and wash by hand.<br>Free Image via <a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/photos\/BlLh0xjlJCw\">Unsplash<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While you wait for the freezer to defrost, bring any interior pieces to room temperature and then wash them with your baking soda mixture or any hot, soapy water. Dry with a microfiber cloth to prevent spotting and set them aside. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. Clean and sanitize the freezer interior<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once your freezer has defrosted, it\u2019s time to get down to business. Pick up and dispose of any sodden newspapers or put wet towels immediately in the washing machine. Use your baking soda mixture and rags or microfiber cloths to clean the inside (don\u2019t forget the door seal!) and then wipe away soap residue with fresh water. Dry with a clean towel and then give it a once-over with your homemade sanitizing solution. Be sure to rinse off your cleaning cloths frequently as you work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Pro Tip: <\/em><\/strong>If the freezer has odor even after you\u2019ve cleaned it, place some activated charcoal or boxed baking soda in it to absorb the smell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>6. Clean the freezer exterior<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Follow much the same process for the freezer exterior, though be careful to use cleaning products specifically manufactured for stainless steel if necessary. If your freezer isn\u2019t stainless steel, you can probably use the baking soda or vinegar and warm water mixture described above. Dry it off with a clean microfiber cloth to prevent smudges and streaks. If you\u2019ve pulled it out from the wall, now is also a good time to clean the floor beneath it: you might be surprised by what\u2019s accumulated there! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>7. Put the freezer back in place<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Now is a good time to assess whether your freezer is in the best spot for you and your family. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thespruce.com\/freezer-installation-steps-1907757\">The Spruce<\/a> advises freezers should be placed in a \u201cdry, cool place with a nearby plug-in\u201d as a warm or sunny environment will cause the freezer to work harder \u2013 and use more electricity while it\u2019s at it! If you haven\u2019t had the room to fully open the door while using it in the past, look around your home or garage for a different, more convenient spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>8.
