You might be drawn to some for their low cost of living, others for their\nlegendary music venues,\nbut they all have two things in common: incredible support for artists and\nhungry crowds ready for the next big thing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Athens, GA <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The\nscene<\/strong>: Home to the gigantic University of Georgia, the \u201cClassic City\u201d\nis a well-known college town with a rich music history and bold new acts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Famous\nfaces<\/strong>: R.E.M., the B-52s, Widespread Panic, Matthew Sweet, Of\nMontreal, and The Drive-By Truckers all started here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Must-see music venues<\/strong>: The legendary 40 Watt<\/a> launched the careers of R.E.M., Of Montreal, and more, and was vital in the punk rock and new wave movements. Tiny Caledonia Lounge<\/a> is the definition of an intimate venue, hosting rock, indie, country, and blues. ABG\u2019s Libation Emporium<\/a> has live music and good vibes on weekends. And you can still catch the last of the Rooftop Concert Series<\/a> on September 6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Phoenix, AZ<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The\nscene<\/strong>: Phoenix is the fastest-growing city in the country, and that\u2019s\nalways a good place to be for musicians who want to draw a crowd. With\nwarehouse parties front-and-center, there\u2019s a decidedly punk undercurrent, but\nall genres can find a home here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Famous\nfaces<\/strong>: CeCe Peniston, Flotsam and Jetsam (with bassist Jason Newsted,\nwho went on to join Metallica), Meat Puppets, and Soulfly got their start in\nPhoenix. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Must-see music venues<\/strong>: The DIY spirit of the scene is felt in its venues, with places like The Trunk Space<\/a> popping up in church buildings. The Lost Leaf<\/a>, Rebel Lounge<\/a>, and Valley Bar<\/a> are other great venues to catch the Phoenix music fever. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Famous faces:<\/strong> Bright Eyes, Cursive, and The Faint are signed to Omaha-based Saddle Creek Records<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. New Orleans, LA<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The\nscene<\/strong>: New\nOrleans music needs no introduction. NOLA is one of the world\u2019s most\nfamous music cities, with a history even New Yorkers envy. It\u2019s got a low cost\nof living for a major city, but the real draw is simple: New Orleans is just\nplain fun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Famous\nfaces<\/strong>: Hurray for the Riff Raff, The Revivalists, Better Than Ezra,\nMaster P, and bounce music legends Juvenile and Big Freedia are New Orleanians,\nand tons of jazz and blues groups form here every day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Must-see music venues<\/strong>: Music is everywhere in this city, but for the real NOLA experience, get away from Bourbon Street. Explore stages across the city at spots like Maple Leaf Bar<\/a>, Siberia<\/a>, Snug Harbor Jazz Bistro<\/a>, Tipitina\u2019s<\/a>, and Gasa Gasa<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Must-see music venues<\/strong>: The Bowery Vault clothing store moonlights as a rock venue and sits above swanky-casual speakeasy The Fox<\/a>. The 5 Spot<\/a> has music every night, The Cobra<\/a> leans cutting edge, and Inglewood Lounge<\/a> brings the jazz. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meeting of the minds<\/strong>: Get to know the scene up close and personal at DRKMTTR<\/a> Collective, shop for gems at Grimey\u2019s New and Preloved Music<\/a>, and try to impress the execs at labels Cold Lunch Recordings<\/a> and Dualtone<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

8. Ypsilanti, MI<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The\nscene<\/strong>: Home to Eastern Michigan University and 20 minutes from the\ncolleges of Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti hosts a steady stream of students looking to\nsee\u2014and be\u2014the next big thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Must-see music venues: <\/strong>Catch up-and-coming folk and roots musicians at the super-intimate nonprofit venue The Ark<\/a>, and expect the music to be front and center at Ziggy\u2019s<\/a>, too. Alternative rockers can find like-minded\u2014and louder\u2014crowds at Maidstone Theatre<\/a>, while Ypsi Alehouse<\/a> hosts everything from honky-tonk to cover bands. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meeting of the minds:<\/strong> Hip-hop gets love at Hiiigher Minds<\/a>, a media production company promoting local acts. Technical Equipment Supply<\/a> is the famous record store in town\u2014Aphex Twin released an album on their label. For a volunteer project, check out River Street Anthology<\/a>, which records local musicians for historic preservation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9. Ithaca, NY<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The\nscene: <\/strong>Ithaca embraces its roots as a college music town\u2014and then goes\neven bigger. With EDM nights in country bars, reggae in dive bars, and\nunderground shows that are more punk than a 12-inch mohawk, there\u2019s definitely\nno place like Ithaca.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Must-see music venues:<\/strong> Wait, EDM nights in country bars? Yep, The Range<\/a> is mostly country, but it sometimes busts out the decks for aspiring DJs to play their original electronic music. Local collective Ithaca Underground<\/a> hosts the city\u2019s loudest punk shows at Chanticleer Loft, and The Haunt<\/a> is your local reggae (and everything else) dive bar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meeting of the minds:<\/strong> Angry Mom Records<\/a>\u2019 tagline is \u201cNew, Used, Rare, Weird,\u201d and you can stop in to chat about any of those things. Ithaca\u2019s labels are doing interesting things too: 73 Records<\/a> is youth-run and youth-made, and New Vine<\/a> checks all the boxes\u2014it\u2019s a non-profit record label, production studio, and artist development company. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

10.Nederland, CO<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The\nscene: <\/strong>Nederland may be small, but its music scene isn\u2019t. According to\nSongkick, when ranked by gigs per 1,000 people, Nederland is number 5 in\nthe country. That\u2019s a lot of live music!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Must-see music venues: <\/strong>Nederland was the home of Caribou Ranch recording studio, which saw the likes of Billie Joel, Elton John, and Tom Petty through its doors. Today, the city has the Caribou Room<\/a>, an insanely popular live music venue featuring both local and national acts. For a chiller scene, check out live music and open mic nights at Very Nice Brewing Company<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meeting of the minds: <\/strong>Learn a new instrument with lessons at Brightwood Music<\/a> or just stop in to chat with the owner, Doug. In such a small town, you\u2019ll literally just run into other musicians, but the best place around to meet them on purpose is at the High Peaks Arts Festival<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

11. Fort Collins, CO<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The scene: <\/strong>If you dream of the \u201cstruggling musician\u201d life, don\u2019t come to Fort Collins. Thanks to the Bohemian Foundation<\/a>, founded in 2001 by businesswoman Pat Stryker, there are more opportunities for local musicians than you can shake a drumstick at.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Must-see music venues:<\/strong> Washington\u2019s<\/a> is the most state-of-the-art spot in town, if that\u2019s your thing. If dark bars are your thing, head over to Hodi’s Half Note<\/a>, where you could hear anything from rap to indie rock. Want to play? Magic Rat Live<\/a> is the place to be for jam sessions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meeting of the minds: <\/strong>The Music District<\/a> is a one-stop shop for rehearsal space, mentoring, classes, and conversation. And the music festivals! Bohemian Nights at New West Fest<\/a> features local talent for three days each August. Thursday Night Live<\/a> is a summer concert series, and Fort Collins Live Music Experiment<\/a> (aka FoCoMX) kicks off in April with shows by local artists all over town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

12. Durham, NC<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The\nscene: <\/strong>The \u201cResearch Triangle\u201d of Durham, Raleigh, and Chapel Hill\nisn\u2019t just a huge college area. Those grads stick around to work at the top\ncompanies in the area\u2014and to attend the shows of local musicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Must-see music venues:<\/strong> The Pinhook<\/a> may have psychedelic pandas drinking PBR on its walls, but that\u2019s actually not the coolest thing about it. It also has a diverse music lineup from acoustic to pop-rock. For a totally epic night, head to Motorco Music Hall<\/a>, Durham\u2019s biggest music venue. Want to be classy? Check out the intimate atmosphere of Arcana<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meeting of the minds: <\/strong>Chat about the latest indie, punk, electronic, experimental, and more at Chaz\u2019s Bull City Records<\/a>. If it\u2019s underground, they\u2019ve got it. The\nscene: <\/strong>Fort Wayne is more than awesome venues and famous music\nfestivals\u2014although it has plenty of those. Music supplier\nSweetwater Sound brings in the biggest names in the industry for conferences\nand lectures, so you just might learn a thing or two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Must-see music venues:<\/strong> Get up close and personal with local bands at The Brass Rail<\/a>, where they\u2019re steps away. Check out the diverse lineup at The Ruin<\/a>, which hosts everything from hip-hop to post-punk\u2014or perform there yourself. And the stage at the Clyde Theatre<\/a> isn\u2019t just for big acts; it frequently spotlights local bands, too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meeting of the minds: <\/strong>Sweetwater Sound hosts events like GearFest<\/a> and Rock Camp<\/a> to educate interested minds of all ages. And its Sweetwater Studios<\/a> is just as state-of-the-art as you\u2019d expect from a top music technology company. Meet like-minded musicians while you dance the night away at Middle Waves Music Festival<\/a>, one of the up-and-coming music festivals of 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

14. Bellingham, WA<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Must-see music venues: <\/strong>Bring the kids and the dog to Boundary Bay Brewing<\/a> to catch live music\u2014or so they can watch you play. For late-night fun, hit The Shakedown<\/a> for local indie acts and Wild Buffalo<\/a> for everything from EDM and hip-hop to jam bands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meeting of the minds:<\/strong> Find more family fun at Downtown Sounds<\/a>\u2014it started in an alley, but now it\u2019s a weekly summer block party featuring local artists. 15. Manchester, NH<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Shaskeen Pub<\/a> puts the focus on hip-hop, and Strange Brew Tavern<\/a> hosts open mics on Wednesdays and a long-running blues jam on Sundays. Penuche\u2019s Music Hall<\/a> even has bass nights and open decks on Thursdays for aspiring DJs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Famous\nfaces<\/strong>: Shakey Graves, Voxtrot, Ben Kweller, Explosions in the Sky,\nand Okkervil River formed here. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Must-see music venues<\/strong>: To house all the music festivals and shows Austin produces, its venues step up to the plate. Some standouts include Hole in the Wall<\/a>, Cactus Caf\u00e9<\/a>, Saxon Pub<\/a>, Elephant Room<\/a>, and Mohawk<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meeting of the minds<\/strong>: Your chances of getting signed might be highest in Austin, where there\u2019s a ton of eclectic record labels, including Holodeck Records<\/a>, Steady Rhythm<\/a>, and Super Secret Records<\/a>. Want to keep your collection current? With in-store performances, artist signings, and tons of vinyl, Waterloo Records<\/a> is as old-school as it gets. And don\u2019t forget the festivals. You can still make it to Austin City Limits Music Festival<\/a>, happening October 4 to 6 and 11 to 13 this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nscene: <\/strong>Where do we even begin? NYC\u2019s music scene spans every genre,\nclass, and skill level. The city has birthed more than a few sounds and styles,\nand the music options are much like the city itself\u2014 immense, intense, and full\nof eclectic attitude.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n
