This is one of a series of stories we are sharing to show what’s inside CubeSmart. You not only get a peek inside our customer’s storage unit, but also a peek inside what is important to them. Thank you to Dennis, customer of our CubeSmart store in Hoboken, for sharing his story with us.
Dennis Johnson works for a startup company called Getaround, a peer-sharing company which is essentially like Airbnb for vehicles owners. On a daily basis, he visits the Grand Street, Hoboken CubeSmart facility to pick up the connects and boxes the company installs in the cars to allow their owners to track and monitor the renters’ usage.
“CubeSmart is really like our office. We wouldn’t be able to run the company without it,” he says.
Later in the day he might check on customer cars, or wash, gas up or clean his company car. It’s the perfect job for someone with a passion for driving.
“Yesterday we on-boarded a Porsche 911, which, I’m not gonna lie, is the most expensive car I’ve ever driven,” Dennis says. “I was very nervous.”
The 20-year-old was born in Brooklyn, where he still lives with his mother. He went to college to study computer engineering for a short time but dropped out to start his own business.
“I kind of change my mind easily. The business thing got boring so then I got into cinematography and cars,” he says.
Dennis brings along a camera for rides, collecting footage for later use. He edits his own videos and posts them on YouTube. He’s part of a club of car aficionados who go to car events in the New York metropolitan area, and he’s hoping to create a bigger channel with those friends.
“The whole idea would be to help new drivers understand how a car works. I’m pretty new to this scene but I have some knowledge and my friends do also—we can pool it together and share it with others,” he says.
Dennis’ dream car is one he hopes to someday actually attain, a Nissan GTR, which he says is inspired by the similar model Paul Walker drove in The Fast and the Furious.
“It’s not like a Lamborghini or a Bugatti. It’s a regular car so I could drive my mom around without her being scared.”
