Best Mountain Vacations to Explore in the U.S.

There’s nothing quite like a vacation spent on a mountain. The crisp air, the scent of the distant snow, and the glow of the campfires at night. It’s absolutely idyllic.

The mountains are undeniably magical whether you prefer camping outdoors or lounging in a chalet. From coast to coast, our beautiful country has some amazing mountain ranges, with several charming mountain towns to boot.

Planning your next mountain getaway? We’re here to help you plan the perfect trip to America’s best mountain towns and national parks.

Rocky Mountain Destinations

Aspen, Colorado

For a beautiful vacation spent on a mountain, Aspen is a no-brainer.

Tucked into the Colorado Rockies, the Aspen Chamber describes Aspen as “…a place where every day holds an opportunity for greatness.” And really, the stunning views of the majestic mountains truly will make you feel like greatness is within reach.

We recommend taking a day trip to visit the wine-colored peaks and glassy lakes of the beautiful Maroon Bells. Then, set up camp at one of the several campgrounds nearby or find luxurious accommodations in Aspen.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Nestled between the Grand Tetons and Gros Ventre mountain ranges, Jackson Hole is one of the ultimate mountain towns.

Visitors to Jackson Hole come for the outdoor paradise. Explore the iconic Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, go white water rafting, ski, watch for elk and other wildlife, and even go on a horseback ride.

For wildlife-watching adventures, Visit Jackson Hole has a great roundup of their favorite wildlife tour guide partners.

For lodging, see their list of preferred accommodations. We’re especially keen on the breathtaking Diamond Cross Ranch.

Appalachian Mountain Destinations

Asheville, North Carolina

Asheville is a paradise for travelers who love the tranquility of mountain living and the vibrancy of the nightlife.

Visit the iconic Vanderbilt Biltmore Estate, explore the beauty of the Appalachian outdoors with hiking, fishing, horseback riding, and camping, and take a drive on the famous Blue Ridge Parkway. The Parkway has a wide selection of farms, orchards, and wineries to discover on your way.

As far as Asheville lodgings go, visitors have their pick of beautiful campgrounds, charming bed and breakfasts, and ultra-comfortable luxury resorts.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Entry to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is free and the most visited mountain vacation destination in the United States. We didn’t have to look hard to see why. The wildlife is teeming, and the flora is blooming with hundreds of different species of trees.

There are over 850 miles of trail, plentiful fishing spots, and campground areas. Several landmarks and popular places to visit in the park, such as Cades Cove and the Elkmont ‘ghost town.’

The park is divided into several camping grounds, each offering a unique experience:

  • Backcountry is for seasoned backpackers and hikers. There are several miles to hike before you reach the campsite, so preparedness and skill are key. Limited resources are available.
  • Frontcountry is a little more ‘luxurious’ for those who want to stay closer to their vehicle. Campsites include a fire grate and a picnic table. The campground consists of restrooms, cold running water, and toilet facilities.
  • Group campgrounds are large campsites for groups of eight or more, also located in the frontcountry.
  • Horse camps are exclusively for those who have taken a horseback ride through the mountains. They offer limited facilities and hitch racks.

For all camping experiences, all guests must register and pay a fee for their stay.

Sierra Nevada Destinations

Lake Tahoe, California/Nevada

Lake Tahoe truly has it all. There’s an activity for every taste, from hiking to boat rides to casino stays.

Located in the noble Sierra Nevada mountain range of California and Nevada, Lake Tahoe is the world’s third-oldest freshwater permanent lake (2.3 million years young) in North America.

Stay at the iconic Golden Nugget or one of the other Lake Tahoe casino hotels for that lake-life-meets-blackjack experience. There are also plenty of resorts, cabins, vacation rentals, campgrounds, and bed and breakfasts to suit your vacation vibe.

As far as things to do in Lake Tahoe, the crystalline skies above this gorgeous lake are the limit. Catch celebrity events at the Lake Tahoe Amphitheatre, go skiing at Heavenly Mountain Resort in the winter, catch some rays from the 300 days of sunshine at Pope Beach in the summer, hike, test your fishing skills, and so much more.

Yosemite National Park, California

The majesty of Yosemite National Park in California cannot be overstated. Nestled in the High Sierra mountain range, the park is bejeweled with meadows, canyons, cliffs, rivers, lakes, waterfalls, and forests. It’s a truly unbeatable natural marvel.

Tourists can enjoy hiking, backpacking, fishing, horseback riding, camping, and swimming. With so much to offer, you will never run out of exciting things to do in Yosemite.

Lodging options include RV grounds and campgrounds, several luxurious lodges, quaint tent cabins, and the iconic American staple, The Ahwahnee Hotel.

Unique Mountain Getaways

Whitefish, Montana

Looking for something a little bit more luxurious? We highly recommend adding Whitefish, Montana, to your travel bucket list.

Lodging in Whitefish includes gorgeous mountain lodges, iconic hotels, unique rental properties, guest ranch retreats, and serene campgrounds.

Ever wanted to go in a hot air balloon, fly in the Montana backcountry, or try your hand at alpine slides? Whitefish has you covered. While your standard mountain vacation activities are available, these more high-octane activities are perfect for the daredevil in your party.

Stowe, Vermont

Experience that lovely New England charm in Stowe, Vermont. Small-town Stowe is where to go for the ultimate ski resort experience, but there are other feathers in this town’s cap.

From fly fishing to corn mazes to mountain bike lessons and the famous von Trapp Brewery (yes, that von Trapp), you won’t be bored in this beautiful town.

If you’re looking for cozy, eclectic country homes, motels, and inns, Stowe has you covered in spades. Check out the traditional Fiddler’s Green Inn or the character-driven Stowe Country Homes.

Tips for Planning Your Mountain Vacation

Before you hit the trail, a little preparation goes a long way in making your mountain vacation smooth and unforgettable:

  • Pack Smart: Mountain weather is unpredictable, so always bring layers, waterproof gear, and good hiking shoes no matter the season.  Also, know how to store camping gear properly to keep it dry, organized, and ready for your next adventure.
  • Check Seasonal Closures: Some mountain roads and parks close seasonally or require permits. Always check ahead before planning specific hikes or drives.
  • Reserve Early: Many mountain towns and national parks (See: Yosemite and Lake Tahoe especially) are in high demand, especially during peak seasons. Secure your campsites, tours, and lodging in advance.
  • Don’t Forget Elevation: If you’re heading to high altitudes, give yourself a few days to adjust. Plenty of hydration and taking it slow on your first day can help prevent altitude sickness.
  • Plan Your Tech Needs: Service can be spotty in remote areas, so download maps offline, save reservation confirmations, and bring a portable charger.
  • Respect the Rules: National parks take nature and wildlife conservation seriously. Read up on specific guidelines for campsite care and gear requirements. Always be respectful of your fellow travelers.

Ready for Your Next Mountain Getaway?

Pack your bags, charge your gear, and let’s hit the road. Whether pitching a tent in the Smokies or sipping champagne in a Montana chalet, a mountain vacation is a balm for the soul. Need a spot to store your mountain gear between adventures? Check out a CubeSmart Self Storage near you!
