This is one of a series of articles spotlighting our storage facilities and neighborhoods.
When moving to or around New York City, renters often look for cozy neighborhoods, an arts scene, unique restaurants, and as much space – both indoor and outdoor – as they can get. Usually, these wants, as well as The Bronx’s past reputation, make The Bronx an easy borough to rule out in the apartment search. However, apartment-hunters are learning that The Bronx, especially The South Bronx, has all of these neighborhood amenities in addition to more affordable rents than its neighboring boroughs.
Mott Haven is a quaint, desirable neighborhood renters can stumble upon in The Bronx where three areas of the neighborhood have been deemed historical districts. One of these districts lies along parts of East 139th and 140th Streets between Willis and Brook Avenues. Here, beautifully detailed 19th-century brownstones host families of all ages on their iconic stoops. While housing in the historic districts remains more affordable than most of New York City, square footage is still hard to come by making our Mott Haven self-storage facility a simple solution.
Mott Haven Apartments vs. Storage Cost Analysis
On East 138th Street, less than a mile from our Brook Avenue CubeSmart, a 1-bedroom apartment rental starts at $1,599 for 700 square feet. A 2-bedroom starts at $2,200 for 1,100 square feet. For that one extra bedroom on the same block, you’ll pay an additional $600 every month. If you are looking for an extra bedroom as a means of storage and not a for a roommate, you could save $406 a month by renting a 10×10 climate-controlled storage unit at CubeSmart. For about $194 a month (as of 8/1/16), a 10×10 climate-controlled storage unit fits the contents of a standard 2-bedroom apartment (sharpen your Tetris skills). You can keep your 1-bedroom Mott Haven apartment, and conveniently store seasonal items, clothing, mementos, and more. Put that $400 a month you would have spent to good use elsewhere!

Here’s what our recent Brook Avenue customer Liz74 wrote about her experience:
“I recently rented a unit at the Brook street location in the Bronx and since I made the first phone call, I noticed their customer service (especially Shaun) is very professional and very kind. Once I went to the storage in person they explained everything very clear to me, also they have a nice offer for the unit I rented and provided me with a free truck to bring my belongings in (most storage places don’t do this). If you want a place with excellent security, good deals, good location, clean and very nice customer service, then this is the storage place you should pick as I did. I would give them A+ and recommended to all my friends.”

Things to Do Around Mott Haven
If South Bronx residents are looking for a little art and culture, it may seem obvious to just catch the 10-minute Express train to Manhattan; however, the Mott Haven dweller knows some of the most interesting art exists right within this little neighborhood. The Bronx Council on the Arts is a multicultural arts service organization that offers a free arts and culture trolley tour the first Wednesday evening of nearly every month. Hop on at Longwood Art Gallery @ Hostos and enjoy all of the free stops along the way. Past trolleys have visited the Andrew Freedman Home on the Grand Concourse, a massive villa right in The Bronx showcasing artists-in-residence, exhibitions, and performances. The route often includes the BronxArtSpace, a center dedicated to promoting emerging and underrepresented artists. It is only a few blocks from our store and is a must see even if you don’t have time for the full trolley tour.
La Morada Restaurant delivers a cultural experience for your taste buds. Owned and operated by Oaxacans, this Mexican restaurant is a 7-minute walk from our Brook Avenue store. Check out their authentically delicious menu for the perfect post-move lunch.
If a morning move into self-storage has you craving the outdoors, we recommend a field trip to Randall’s Island. Connecting Brooklyn and Queens with Harlem and The Bronx, this island is easy to access and less than two miles from our store. The island is an expansive park of gardens, wetlands, urban farms, and waterfront pathways. Among more than 60 athletic fields on the island, the real destination is the Icahn Stadium. Built for track and field with a turf soccer field in the center, the state-of-the-art arena meets the official specifications to host Olympic track and field training and trials. Catch stunning views of the Manhattan skyline from the stadium.
