Curved Furniture, Décor and Design Take Center Stage
One of the hottest trends of spring 2022 is curves. No, we’re not just talking about Lizzo and body positivity, although amen to all that! This trend is all about beautiful uses of curved furniture and décor in home interiors.
Sharp angles and lines in architecture, furniture and home décor have been some of the predominant design features of the past few years. But in recent years lines and angles have started going out, and curves are coming in hot.
You can expect this trend to continue for the next few years; so if you are feeling the vibe curved furniture, architecture and design offer, read on for more info plus some tips on how to incorporate the look into your nook.
Why Curves?
Turns out, there is scientific proof to demonstrate our love and appreciation for curves. Scientists and artists paired up to explore why we respond better to certain shapes in 2014 during an exhibit at the American Association for the Advancement of Science Art Gallery in Washington, D.C. The exhibit assessed preference for a range of shapes and forms and the results were clear: humans no matter their gender, race, or background are drawn to curves.
Is it evolutionary? Emotional? We don’t know for sure why curves are soothing and appealing to us but indeed they promote feelings of serenity and comfort.
If you are like the rest of the human species and want to embrace your emotional/evolutionary design desires with more curves, read on to learn more about how to bring this trend into your home. There are a few ways to get your curve on and we’ve listed some ideas below.
Arched Doorways, Rounded Corners and Lighting Accessories
Whether you’re building, remodeling or considering a small room makeover, there are ways to incorporate curves into your home architecture. Incorporating curves into the architectural design of your home is a way to soften a space or add an organic touch.
Keep scrolling for a few examples:
- Arched doorways: Not only do they add an interesting design element to any room, but arched doorways also frame a room, creating s vignette. Consider an arched doorway in any room or even as a front entrance. Before you get freaked out about the possibility of taking on such a project, don’t worry. It’s not as daunting as it seems. You’ll need some basic carpentry and drywall skills and can pick from a range of YouTube videos walking you through the process.
- Rounded wall corners: Ninety-degree angles via wall corners are soooo last year. Embrace the curves by softening the wall corners in any room. Again, this is not a crazy undertaking. There are a variety of materials to make this possible. Look for what is called “bullnose” or rounded corner bead at your lumberyard or big box hardware store and search up those DIY videos to walk you through it.
- Lighting niches and medallions: When it comes to opportunities to work curves into your home, don’t forget to look up. Ceilings are the ideal canvas for new architectural home features. If you are going through a remodel or build, ask for a lighting niche. Circular lighting niches are a recess in the ceiling with a lighting fixture in the center. It’s a way to soften the other angles and lines in a room and feature a gorgeous chandelier. For a more accessible project, consider a circular ceiling medallion; you can find a variety online and they are relatively easy to install.
Curved Furniture
The options for curved furniture abound! And it’s really fun to explore. Basically, any furniture item in your home can be updated with something featuring more swerve and curve. An easy start is a circular dining table. Don’t worry, you can still fit a lot of people around the right circular table and in fact, round tables facilitate inclusive conversation.
And you don’t have to go straight for circles. Look for furniture with rounded corners or a more fluid design. Side tables, bed frames, and a range of other pieces can bring curves to any room. There are plenty of options and your new curved sofa will feel like just the right addition to your home.
Décor Items and Accents
Recirculating your décor (see what we did there?) is another way to get out with the old and in with the new. Swap out some of your current décor for elements featuring curves. But wait! Don’t get rid of anything! To all things there is a season. Meaning, the décor you replace will be en vogue once again.
Pro tip: keep a small storage unit for just these kinds of situations. Storing décor is not just for home stagers and interior designers anymore, it’s for anyone who acquires treasured pieces for a home but still wants to stay up to date with design trends. A few circular décor elements to feature in your home include mirrors, pillows, rugs, sculptures, and shelving. Turns out, finding curved décor pieces is not hard . . . after all, we are drawn to them!
Curvy on the Outside
Don’t forget the exterior of your home when thinking about adding a few curves. Your yard space is the perfect place to pay homage to the curves of nature. Curved patio and grass lines are gorgeous and much more natural feeling than rigid straight lines. Think about flower beds, birdbaths and my favorite backyard feature: a firepit.
Let’s all take a cue from Lizzo and embrace curves. After all, they’re hot! And as we’ve learned together today, they also serve a significant relaxing function in our interior and exterior home design and decoration.
