Forget “keeping up with the Joneses” – are you the Joneses? If you are the trendsetter on your block, nay, in your community, this is for you. We’ve tracked down a few of the hottest Spring décor and design trends of 2022.
Before we launch into our hot list analysis, a note about trends. By definition, trends are fleeting. They are styles or preferences for a current moment and as a result, are constantly changing. Because decorating a home is a much larger endeavor than changing out a handbag, you need to become picky about trends.
Find the trends that fit your personal style. If it’s not for you, you are not going to be happy in your home, no matter the popularity of a particular trend. The one rule we all know to be true about trends is eventually, everything old is new again. So, hold on to your current décor, furniture, and favorite home pieces by keeping them in self-storage. Otherwise, you’ll be kicking yourself for getting rid of some of your pieces in a few years.
Now that we’ve covered those basics, let’s dive in. We’ve addressed some of the 2022 home design trends like maximalism, curved home features, and biophilia already. The list below includes a few additional ultimate Spring décor and design trends for 2022, including outdoor kitchens, statement ceilings and more exciting new looks. And don’t worry, we’ve stress-tested these trends to guarantee their lasting power and the value they’ll bring to your home.
Compartmentalized Homes
It seems odd to even contemplate anything but an open floorplan these days, but it’s a longstanding trend we may finally see ebbing a bit. Chalk it up to a desire to retreat into private spaces over the past few years, homeowners are now opting for more compartmentalized spaces like a kitchen separate from the living room, a distinct book nook , or a home office. More than ever, we are drawn to rooms with dedicated purposes.
Does this mean you have to undergo an extensive renovation to change the floor plan of your home? Not at all. If you want to embrace this trend try a few spring décor elements to mimic the feel of separate spaces. Look for room dividers or use furniture like bookcases or buffets to section off large, open rooms to create defined spaces.
Outdoor Kitchens
As the weather heats up and the sun shines down, we all want to enjoy more time outdoors. Make that a reality with this highly popular home feature. Outdoor kitchens are indeed all the rage and will be a trend for the long term. It’s not like you are doing to decide you don’t like eating or the outdoors anymore, after all!
If incorporating a full outdoor kitchen is on your wish list, keep a few ideas in mind. First, design for function and space. While we often hear of the “triangle” form for functional kitchens, an effective model for outdoor kitchens is to follow the “U” or “L” design; these are layout plans that adhere to the shape of each letter and maximize space and facilitate function.
If you are working your way up to a more elaborate design and want to start small, do so by focusing on a central, functional outdoor kitchen item, like a high-end grill, an outdoor pizza oven, or a smoker. The point is to enjoy cooking and eating outside and there are many ways to make that happen.
Desert Chic
Sometimes referred to as the “new boho,” desert chic adds a more sophisticated vibe to what we loved about the relaxed boho trend.
Do you have to live in the desert to embrace desert chic? Absolutely not. Desert chic is less about the desert itself and more about the colors and feelings the desert evokes. Think laid back, think warm tones, think soothing neutrals, and think southwest patterns. Yep, you’ve got it.
Feel free to start small with the desert chic trend. Replace a few throw pillows or a rug with a classic desert textile like a kilim rug featuring those unique, geometric designs we associate with the southwest. Or add a few plants. If it grows in the desert, it’s fair game. Succulents, cacti, palms, and air plants all serve up desert chic.
Last but not least, consider a new paint color and go to images of the desert for inspiration by embracing earthy, southwestern boho décor tones like sand, sage green, and adobe.
Taking the Outdoors In
This year we are continuing a trend from 2021: taking the outside indoors with natural materials and calming yet inspirational colors and décor. One way to embrace this trend is to think about colors. Yes, we want calming, nature-inspired colors, but that doesn’t mean the muted whites, grays, and blues we’ve seen for the past few years.
Instead, think of bright colors in muted shades. Pale blues and pinks, soft yellows and greens. These colors come from nature and the muted element means they help create the relaxed and calming effect we want to conjure in our homes right now.
In addition to colors, consider natural materials. Go beyond the traditional pine or oak and include pieces made from rattan, cane, leather, jute, or wicker. These pieces will add interest to your home and blend together to create a unified feel. Finally, don’t forget the plants!
Statement Ceilings
Statement ceilings are an exciting Spring décor trend and we are here for it. The whole motto of this trend is: look up! It’s time to consider the ceiling its own canvas in our homes and do something exciting and unique with the space. A few ideas include a two-toned paint color, one akin to your wall color but with either a slightly darker or lighter shade, bold wallpaper patterns, and metallic tiles.
We tend to think hyper-splashy when we think of statement ceilings (circus chic anyone?) but you don’t have to go that route. Some of the biggest statements come from minimalist design and feature architectural elements like beams or molding. Don’t be afraid to color outside the lines, either. Literally. The “fifth wall” offers endless opportunities to continue a pattern or feature from the wall onto the ceiling, creating a 3-dimensional look. Or use untraditional materials like fabric, blocks of wood or tile.
Sustainability
Sustainability is a huge trend – and design concern – when it comes to home design and decoration. Making your home beautiful should not come at the cost of the planet’s own beauty and health. Increasingly, we are asking good questions when it comes to our home design choices. Add these to your arsenal so you can make smart decisions when it comes to your home:
- Where was this made and how far did it travel to get here?
- What is it made of?
- How is it made?
Educate yourself about the best answers to these questions. Locally constructed items built from recycled materials are great options, but also consider the dyes or chemicals used in a product. Those chemical by products often end up in our water supplies. Feel good about your home by feeling good about the earth-friendliness of each change or addition.
A ‘70s Vibe
2022 Spring décor and design has an interesting harkening back to the 1970s. We are not sure what that is entirely about. Nostalgia for disco? A latent appreciation for shag carpet? Whatever the reason, the ‘70s are back in a big way and there are a few approaches you can take to incorporate this trend into your home design and décor.
Try a variety of patterns and textures to get that throwback feel. Textures and materials like velvet, wood paneling, and rattan were – and are – all the rage. Patterned wallpaper a la Elvis’s Jungle Room is also making a comeback.
Get creative with your furniture to bring the ‘70s into today. Hanging chairs anyone? How about macramé plant holders? Bamboo, wicker and rattan furniture? Yes, yes and yes.
Hopefully these 2022 spring décor trends inspire fun changes in your home.
