How to Get to Us
Everyone in Woodhaven knows the J and Z trains elevated along Jamaica Avenue, and our store is directly below the tracks at the corner of 101st Street and Jamaica Avenue. The Woodhaven Boulevard stop is 5 blocks from the store or the 104th Street stop is 2 blocks from the store in the other direction. The Q56 bus also stops close by at 96th Street, 2 blocks from the store, and 102nd Street, less than a block from the store.
Things to Do Around Woodhaven
Jamaica Avenue cuts through the bustling business district of Woodhaven. While all your go-to stores and conveniences are accounted for, a few old school gems remain.
If you’re heading towards Woodhaven Boulevard from our store, stop just one block before at Schmidt’s Candy. This family owned and operated store has been hand-making chocolate confections since 1925. Today, the granddaughter of the founder uses the same recipes, molds, and equipment. Many of Schmidt’s customers have been picking up sweets for their loved ones at this same shop for decades.
Going back in time even further, Neir’s Tavern, just 10 minutes from our store, has been serving up cold brews since 1829. Locals come for the cozy bar and American pub food, as well as the star-studded walls. Parts of the films “Goodfellas” and “Tower Heist” were filmed right at the bar, and photos of the actors can be viewed around the room.
Remnants of Woodhaven’s lush landscape of the past still stand in Forest Park. With over 500 acres of hiking trails, bridle paths, and sports fields, it’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy the outdoors after a morning move into storage. This park offers something for everyone in the family with an 18-hole golf course, a skate park and playgrounds, a 2,800-seat amphitheater, and even a carousel.
The Forest Park Carousel is adored by Woodhaven residents old and young. While the ride dates back to the early 1900s, it has only been in the park since 1973. Nevertheless, the carousel is a must-see for adults and a definite must-ride for the little ones. And, every Saturday afternoon in the summer the carousel is the place to be for clowns, magicians, and other free entertainment for kids.
If you’re a big literature buff, be sure to check out the plaque in front of the house at 85-34 Forest Parkway. It marks the home of Betty Smith, author of the childhood favorite, “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn.” Despite the book’s title, Smith authored the beloved coming-of-age story about a poor Irish girl in Brooklyn while living right in her Forest Parkway home in Woodhaven, Queens.
